What is Sight Tech? WHO CHANT’S SEE TE WORLD; HELP TECH INNOVATION It’s estimated that there are about 36 million people in the world who are blind{0}, and a further 216 million who live with moderate to severe visual impairments How devices help those with vision-stealing eye conditions; Here are seven examples of how smart technology can be a game-changer, allowing everyone to interact with the world in new ways.

Think your poor eyesight is a little more than visual impairments, such as myopia, presbyopia and farsightedness? Meet two innovators trying to develop cutting-edge assistive technologies that aid those with sight-stealing eye conditions. Cynthia Mallett, CEO of California-based Medtech Devices Inc. (MDI), has developed an electronic device called the Aldi Strobe Light. It provides direct light for patientsn suffering from macular degeneration, which damages light-sensitive cells in the back of the eye. This condition, where the retina of the eye starts to deteriorate, has no cure, so in addition to eating well and trying to wear the right sunglasses, people affected by macular degeneration are encouraged to try to brighten up their lives.
Hollie Johnston , Manager of Visually Impaired Sport at the Edinburgh SPCA, looks at some of the new technology available to visually impaired athletes and those with sight-stealing eye conditions.It might seem inconceivable that over two million people in the UK are unable to make out their own hand in front of their face, let alone read a printed word. But they exist and it affects people from all walks of life. From the visually impaired person who needs reading glasses, through to the family member that needs glasses for the first time to read a book for enjoyment, such disabilities can have a huge impact on individuals and families.{1}

Innovative devices help those with sight-stealing and have visual impairment Not long ago, Alex Pittaway had the world at his fingertips. The 33-year-old Toronto resident was a documentary filmmaker and avid cyclist. He had an iPhone and could usually find the nearest corner store. He could read any word without difficulty. He could follow a conversation. Until last May, he could read the back of his own head. He’s classified as legally blind. That’s why he and his wife have teamed up with a young Waterloo-based company called Mobile Monkeys to help him with something that’s only now being developed: adaptive technology that would let him not only read and type but also surf the web.{2}

While the idea of trying to organize the world, say, to one of London’s many tube stations, for people with visual impairments is a fantastic idea, what does it mean to them? With two physical forms of different types of visual impairment, that’s not straightforward at all. People with macular degeneration, for instance, need visual feedback to be able to read the lettering on a tube map WHO CANT’S SEE THE WORLD; HELP TECH INNOVATION, as they can only make out shapes without it. Blinds are not exactly standard in every household for a variety of reasons, so finding one that’s adapted to the user’s needs can be a real challenge. But new technologies could revolutionize how blind people navigate the world.
